What we do
We help adult learners in South Canterbury with reading, writing, maths and using computers.

Come and see us at our office and main classroom, on Ara Institute of Canterbury grounds, corner of Grey Road and Arthur Street, Timaru.
We help adult learners with:
- reading, writing, and maths
- workplace literacy
- NZQA unit standards towards NCEA
- driver licence theory
- study techniques and exam preparation
- te reo Māori
- computing / digital literacy
- writing; essays, job letters and CVs
- correspondence and distance learning support
- budgeting skills
We want to help adults in need: yourself, someone you know, or you may be an employer wanting to help your staff. We will make a plan with you to help.
Our courses are ” learner-centred ” and ” flexible ” so you can learn at your own pace. You can come to us at a time that suits, or, if your employer agrees, we can go to your work.
We run a variety of courses, shown in the timetable below. We also develop one-off or special courses to suit employers and other agencies. Student course numbers are kept low, usually between four and eight people.
There is no cost to attend the following courses. You must be 16 or over. Most have flexible start dates. Class numbers are kept low so you get the help YOU need. For further information, please contact us to discuss and check if there are spaces.
