Can you help us? As a not-for-profit organisation, Literacy South Canterbury Inc. is often looking for people to volunteer. Volunteers can choose to become a qualified tutor and work with students, or provide support to our organisation in other ways such as assisting with fundraisers.
Our tutors are qualified adult educators who hold either one or more of the following qualifications. We provide support to new tutors and offer these qualifications via Literacy Aotearoa – our National Office.
- National Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy (NCALNE), Vocational/Educator, Level 5
- New Zealand Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy Education (Vocational/Workplace) (Level 5)
These qualifications are designed so tutors are competent in teaching a wide variety of learners. Our students are diverse and range from adults needing help with the alphabet through to those enrolled in tertiary courses.
Without these qualifications, a trainee tutor can work with a student as a volunteer under the guidance of a qualified staff member. Once qualified, paid employment may be offered to the new tutor. Tutors can choose to specialise in a particular area of interest or strength e.g. numeracy and can choose days/times they are available.
Tutors learn techniques so they can work with people with issues or conditions that may impact their learning such as aspergers, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and other learning disabilities.
Throughout the year we have a few fundraising events e.g. annual book sale, that non-tutoring volunteers may assist with. Other tasks such as filing, light gardening and cleaning may be available to those interested.
All volunteers are …
- valued and needed by our organisation
- matched to a student/task they can assist with
- asked from time to time, to help in our fundraising ventures
- comfortable working with a wide variety of people
- asked to provide a Curriculum Vitae and have their background checked
If you believe you have the skills we need and would like to find out more about becoming a volunteer, please complete the form on the contact page or phone us on 03 688-0894.
